Education: Competition
Sofia, Bulgaria
For this project, the ambition was to design more than a school—we envisioned a socially pivotal hub: a vibrant, welcoming, home-like destination for the entire community. The architectural concept prioritises maximum spatial flexibility and intentional connectivity, creating a learning environment that is magnetic and desirable—one where students, teachers, and parents genuinely want to spend time.
The design is organised around dynamic, multi-functional zones that bridge learning spaces with communal life. At its centre is the Atrium: a large, theatrical welcome space designed to support curricular and extracurricular activities and to extend the school’s presence into a shared civic interior. The Atrium is directly connected to the cafeteria, visually connected to the library, and practically linked to the courtyard—strengthening orientation, visibility, and everyday interaction.
Connectivity continues into the sports and cultural centre, including exhibition space, hall, and swimming pool, with direct views and a strong relationship to nature. Two amphitheatres—one indoor and one outdoor—face each other with a shared stage between them, supporting events and community use beyond school hours. This “school within a school, within a home” structure shapes smaller class-based units around shared common areas, reinforcing comfort, focus, and a lasting sense of belonging.
