Central Logistics Hub, Addis Ababa, UNICEF
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Central Logistics Hub in Addis Ababa is part of a large-scale initiative aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s medical supply chain. Commissioned by UNICEF and designed for the national pharmaceutical agency, the facility will serve as a central hub for the receipt, storage, and distribution of medicines and medical supplies across the country. SGI was appointed to develop a comprehensive feasibility and concept design for the hub, focused on delivering a high-capacity, operationally efficient warehouse that balances resilience with simplicity. At full utilisation, the building will accommodate over 47,000 pallet spaces, with a footprint of over 51,000 sqm and provision for future expansion.
Design Approach The concept responds to the logistical, environmental, and operational demands of the programme. A cross-dock configuration ensures a streamlined flow of goods, while clear spatial zoning separates technical, storage, and staff areas.
Design solutions prioritised: - Low-maintenance and cost-effective operation - Flexibility in storage layouts and scalability - Passive climate strategies and natural daylighting - Future-proofing through modularity and options for equipment upgrades
Impact In a context where secure and efficient supply distribution has a direct social and health impact, this project aims to improve not just infrastructure, but outcomes. SGI’s involvement focused on creating a robust, future-ready facility designed for longevity, operational clarity, and positive public service impact.
